About the Journal
FOCUS AND SCOPE
* Publication in PACO is free of charge *
Since 2014, the journal has been published in English and accepts only papers presenting original research or studies that have not been previously published and are not currently under review by other journals.
The Editorial Board may also consider manuscripts written in other languages. However, in the event of a positive outcome of the peer-review process, authors will be required to submit an English version of their article. Manuscripts written in inadequate English may be returned to the authors for revision before being considered for publication.
PACO is also affiliated with the Centre for Conflict and Participation Studies (CCPS) at the University of Salento.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS
All manuscripts submitted to PACO are subject to a rigorous double blind peer review process.
The selection process consists of two stages.
First, manuscripts submitted to the journal are assessed by at least two members of the Editorial Board, who evaluate their relevance to the journal’s editorial policy. The Editorial Board may deem a manuscript to be outside the journal’s scope, insufficiently rigorous, or below the minimum scientific standards required for publication. In such cases, the manuscript will be rejected without being sent out for peer review. If the manuscript is considered relevant to the journal’s scope, the authors may receive preliminary comments and suggestions for revision before the paper is sent out for review.
In the second stage of the evaluation process, manuscripts are sent to at least two anonymous referees, selected on the basis of their expertise in the specific topic, theoretical approach and methodology of the submission.
Referees’ reports will be sent to the authors, including in cases of negative assessment.
Reviewers’ reports will be completed using a standardised form, in accordance with the standards adopted by leading international journals.
Publication Frequency
The Journal is published in three issues per year (March, July and November).
Open Access Policy
PACO provides open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the researchers, improve the global exchange of knowledge.

GUIDELINES FOR REFEREES
Thank you for agreeing to act as a referee for a submission to Partecipazione e Conflitto. Please take the following points into account when preparing your report.
Here you can also DOWNLOAD THE REVIEWERS GUIDELINES.
Your verdict:
Please be clear in your recommendations. You have five options:
PUBLISHED IN ITS PRESENT FORM
Use this option when an article is ready for publication in its present form.
PUBLISHED WITH MINOR REVISIONS
You may recommend that the article be accepted while also suggesting minor revisions. The General Editors will ensure, as far as possible, that your suggestions are taken into account.
PUBLISHED WITH SUBSTANTIAL REVISION
Use this option when an article is of good quality but requires substantial revision. Please clearly indicate the changes that you consider necessary. These should not involve major restructuring, extensive new research, or a fundamental change in the argument.
REVISED AND RESUBMITTED
You may consider the article unsuitable for publication in its present form, while nevertheless recognising its originality in terms of its central argument and/or findings. In this case, you may encourage the author(s) to undertake substantial revision or further research and then resubmit the manuscript. Please state clearly the reasons for your recommendation, providing details of the major changes required.
With your agreement, the revised manuscript may be referred back to you once the author has made the necessary amendments.
REJECT
When recommending rejection, please provide clear reasons for your recommendation. Where possible, you are also encouraged to indicate how the article might be improved, as a courtesy to the author. You may also note that the article has some potential and could be worth resubmitting in a substantially revised form or to another journal. If so, please indicate the journal you consider most appropriate.
Anonymity:
Please ensure that you do not identify yourself in your report, as it will be forwarded to the author as part of the standard review process.
Tone:
Please ensure that your comments are polite, constructive and as helpful as possible, even where your assessment of the article is very negative. Please bear in mind that the journal also receives submissions from postgraduate students.
Length of article:
Please pay particular attention to the length of the article. Is it proportionate to the material presented? Could any cuts be made? If so, where? Please note that, according to our editorial standards, articles should not exceed 10,000 words, including footnotes, references, figures and tables.
Length of report:
As a general rule, the more detailed your report is, the more useful it will be to both the editors and the author.
REFEREE REPORT:
Please note that, as part of the journal’s standard practice, referees’ reports are forwarded to the author. To preserve the double-blind nature of the peer-review process, please ensure that your report contains no information that could identify you.
1. Please indicate which of the following categories the paper fits into:
• It makes an original theoretical contribution;
• It applies an established theoretical hypothesis to new cases;
• It offers new empirical research of importance to the topic studied;
• It provides a critical re-examination of the literature on the topic;
• None of the above.
2. Please include an explicit recommendation as to whether the paper should be:
• published in its present form;
• published with minor revisions;
• published with substantial revisions (revised and resubmitted);
• rejected.
3. In assessing the article’s suitability for publication in “Partecipazione e Conflitto” please could you bear in mind the following questions:
To what extent does the paper indicate familiarity with the existing literature on the subject?
Does the article display a critical awareness of the relevant literature?
To what extent is the paper based on original research?
How valid are the author’s methodology and sources?
How well presented are the arguments and empirical evidence?
Please, write below your analytical report (at least 450 words):

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
The publication of an article in the peer-reviewed journal Partecipazione e Conflitto (Participation and Conflict) constitutes an essential contribution to the development of a coherent and respected body of knowledge. It reflects the quality of the work carried out by authors and by the institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the principles of scientific inquiry. It is therefore important to define standards of expected ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the publication process: authors, editors, peer reviewers and the publisher.
ESE Salento University Publishing, as the publisher of the open-access journal Partecipazione e Conflitto, takes its responsibilities at all stages of the publication process extremely seriously and recognises its ethical and professional obligations. In addition, ESE Salento University Publishing subscribes to iThenticate by iParadigms and promotes its use in order to prevent plagiarism.
Authors’ responsibilities
Authors are required to participate in the peer-review process. All listed authors must have made a significant contribution to the research and must ensure that the data reported in the article are real and authentic. Authors are also responsible for providing corrections or retractions when necessary.
When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work, they are obliged to notify the journal editor or publisher promptly and to cooperate with the editor in order to correct or retract the article. If the editor or publisher is informed by a third party that a published work contains a significant error, the author is obliged either to correct or retract the article promptly, or to provide evidence supporting the accuracy of the original publication.
Peer review and reviewers’ responsibilities
Reviewers’ judgements must be objective. Reviewers should have no conflict of interest with respect to the research, the authors and/or the research funders. They should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Manuscripts under review must be treated as confidential documents.
Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly and support their comments with appropriate arguments.
Editorial responsibilities
Editors have full responsibility and authority for accepting or rejecting articles. They should have no conflict of interest with respect to the articles they accept or reject. Editors should accept a manuscript only when they are reasonably certain of its scientific quality and suitability for publication. Where errors are identified, editors should promote the publication of corrections or retractions. They are also responsible for preserving the anonymity of reviewers and for ensuring the integrity of the peer-review process.

History of the Journal
Partecipazione e Conflitto (Participation and Conflict) was founded in 2008 on the initiative of a network of scholars working on social movements and political participation based at various Italian universities, including the European University Institute, the University of Bergamo, the University of Catania, the University of Florence, the University of Milan, the University of Pisa, Roma Tre University and the University of Salento.
Over the years, the journal has expanded beyond its original core, attracting new energies and involving scholars from a wide range of Italian, European and international universities. Within a few years, it became a reference point for a broad European network of scholars in sociology and political science, associated with the European Sociological Association — particularly the Research Networks on Political Sociology and Social Movements — the European Consortium for Political Research — particularly the Standing Groups on Political Sociology and Participation & Mobilization — the Italian Sociological Association, especially its Section of Political Sociology, the Italian Society of Political Science, particularly its Standing Group on Social Movements and Political Participation, and the Centre for the Study of Politics and Society of the University of Salento.
From its foundation, the journal was published mainly in Italian, with occasional contributions in Spanish and English, by the Italian publisher FrancoAngeli. Since 2014, the Editorial Team has decided to publish the journal in English, through an electronic open-access platform, in order to make research findings freely available to the scientific community.
The new series of Partecipazione e Conflitto, as Diamond Journal, is managed by the ESE Salento University Publishing but in the Archives section it is possible to consult the contents of all issues published since 2008 accessing abstracts and previews of every article from the webpage of the old publisher.
