Il termine συμφωνία e i termini musicali ad esso apparentati vengono gradualmente usati sempre più spesso con un valore metaforico nell'ambito della letteratura greca dalle origini all'età ellenistica, fino ad arrivare, in ambito cristiano, agli inizi del IV secolo, ad assumere principalmente proprio tale valore come senso primario e forse unico, come indicazione di un vero e proprio criterio di verità, in particolare nell'ambito della verità testuale del Libro sacro.

The term συμφωνία and its related musical terms are gradually used, more and more often in the developement of the Greek literature, with a metaphorical value. In the Christian context of the early 4th century, this leads the term to mainly take on as its first and perhaps only meaning its newest metaphorical sense of criterion of truth, particularly in the context of the textual veracity of the Sacred Book.
