Public Sector Crises: Realizations from Covid-19 for Crisis Communication

Abstract

This article reflects upon the communicative demands COVID-19 created for public sector crisis managers. Those demands include anxiety, empathy, efficacy, fatigue, reach, and threat. The conclusion reviews the realizations COVID-19 has created for those tasked with managing public health crises.

W. Timothy Coombs, Texas A&M University

W. Timothy Coombs (PhD Purdue University) is the Abell Professor of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University.  His primary areas of research include crisis communication, corporate social responsibility, and issues management.  Dr. Coombs has conducted training for crisis communication with governments and organizations in Asia, Europe, and the United States.  He is best known for developing the situational crisis communication theory (SCCT).  Dr, Coombs has received numerous awards for the contribution of his crisis communication research to the profession.
