In Italia, subito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, fu identificato un modello piccolo-borghese di ispirazione cristiana, anche attraverso la Costituzione. Più tardi negli anni '60 in Occidente, e quindi anche in Italia, in nome di rivendicazioni individualistiche, si svilupparono una serie di eventi che sconvolsero l'equilibrio consolidato. Sebbene una pedagogia della famiglia fosse sorta nella sfera cattolica, sono emersi modelli alternativi, con forti impulsi edonistici, di vita in comune, che causarono una situazione di forte instabilità.
