Abstract

This article provides a theoretical examination of the "weird" and "eerie" as distinct ontological and phenomenological experiences, emphasizing their divergence from Freud's "unheimlich" (the uncanny). Drawing on Mark Fisher's insights, the "weird" is explored as an intrusive, dissonant presence that unsettles the familiar, while the "eerie" is analyzed as the unsettling perception of an absence where presence is expected or a presence where absence should be. The paper challenges Fisher's psychoanalytic reading, proposing instead a phenomenological interpretation that positions the "eerie" as an atmospheric, spatial event exceeding mere subjective experience.
