The essay examines D. 1.8.10 (Pomp. 6 ex Plaut.) in the light of jurisprudential, literary and archaeological sources, to show how Aristo, in dealing with the phenomenon by which land areas occupied by the sea became public property, could have had in mind the artificial ports of Portus and Centumcellae built by Trajan.
