Abstract

The paper traces the experience of the Circolo della Zampogna of Scapoli and highlights, first, the transition of the zampogna from a marginalized musical instrument to a complex cultural heritage, historically embedded in networks of mobility, labor, and exchange that have contributed to the construction of a European cultural unity. Second, the text critically reflects on contemporary processes of heritagisation and musealisation, questioning the roles of institutions—from museums to UNESCO—and NGOs in reactivating the zampogna as a relational object and social agent in the present.
