Abstract

Whether they be a genuine marketing operation, a poetic or even an impressionist pictorial act, plays on words in commercial onomastic have become commonplace in the urban landscape. On the basis of a survey carried out in Belgium (in Wallonia and in Brussels) - which identified over 200 of them on the signs of restaurants, shops and other types of institutions - our own contribution is an attempt to draw up a taxonomy of the rhetorical figures most often used by shopkeepers, and to measure their recurrence and function. The article also looks at the possible link between a certain kind of institution and its propensity to create or not a pun to draw attention.
