Additionally to the Griko and, frequently helped with Italian, as the discussion with them was going forward, I had the feeling that something remote was bringing me closer to facts, myths and legends which seemed to have crossed the sea, as when I was a child I had tasted it on the other side of the stretch of sea that separated us: the Messapìa, the venue between two seas. There, the first centuries-old tale started to take shape and the connection mechanism with the second and most recent tale, Zafiris one, the man who inherited a icon, began to emerge.

Ma oltre il griko, aiutato più volte con l'italiano, mano a mano che si proseguiva a discorrere con loro, coglievo la sensazione di qualcosa di remoto che mi avvicinava a fatti, detti ricorrenti, nenie e leggende che parevano aver attraversato il mare, perché io da ragazzo ne avevo sentito il sapore dell'altra sponda del tratto di mare che ci separava: la Messapìa, il luogo tra due mari. Cominciò allora a prendere corpo la prima storia antica di secoli, quella dell'icona e a delinearsi l'impianto che l'avrebbe fatta intrecciare con la seconda, una storia recente, anzi contemporanea quella di Zafiris alle mani del quale finisce in eredità un'icona.
