Ineffabil misericordia: riflessioni e spunti per un repertorio iconografico delle opere caritative in Terra d'Otranto

Modern age's figurative circles, which develop the main theme of Mercy Works in Terra d'Otranto, not only are linked with numerous local micro-histories, but also represent an uncontested people's religiousness. This paper aims to be an introductory exploration of a little known field and with not enough studies carried out in this very area. This has led to the opportunity of increasing the possibilities of future researches and highlighting the need of carrying out systematic iconographic index, which are essential work tools in order to study figurative projects in which buyers, artists, works and addressees will partecipate.

I cicli figurativi d'età moderna che in Terra d'Otranto trattano il tema delle Opere di Misericordia, oltre ad intrecciarsi con le microstorie locali, rappresentano una indiscussa testimonianza della religiosità popolare. Il presente contributo si pone come una preliminare esplorazione di un argomento poco noto e non molto diffuso nella letteratura di settore. Intende aprire linee di ricerca per indagini future ed evidenziare la necessità di creare sistematici repertori iconografici, strumenti insostituibili per studi sui programmi figurativi le cui dinamiche investono committenti, artisti, opere e destinatari.
