Abstract

Viktor Kravchenko’s case was the first blow to the Soviet Union international reputation. Kravchenko’s book I Chose Liberty, published in the United States in early 1946, unleashed an international dispute about the true nature of the Soviet regime. This article tries to understand how the case was followed in two Italian newspapers, «La Stampa» and «l’Unità», and how this process influenced the international vision of the Soviet Union as a totalitarian State.
