Abstract

In 2009 the Association of South-East Nations (ASEAN) launched the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR). The paper analyzes the roadmap to the constitution of the AICHR, pointing out its purposes, mandate and functions, also taking in consideration the political and social context in which AICHR is going to operate. Through a comparison between the AICHR and the several commissions on human rights established by other regional organizations, such as European Council, Organization of American States, African Union, the paper underlines the role of regionalization in protecting and promoting human rights.
