Le reazioni americane al riconoscimento italiano della Cina

Abstract

The article reconstructs the events of the Italian project, strongly backed by Nenni, the Rumor Government’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1968, to recognize the People’s Republic of China. The Italian initiative alarmed the Nixon Administration, then just in office, thus arising for Washington the question to limit a process, which within the Western Bloc could have caused unpredictable repercussions on the large policy Nixon intended to pursue in light of a possible Sino-American rapprochement and of the consequent isolation of the Soviet Union. However, the hasty Italian action threatened to frustrate the long American diplomatic work, thus worsening the Taiwan problem, debated at length during the Italo-American talks. On October 25, 1971, the United Nations General Assembly voted by a large majority the replacement of Taiwan’s representative with that of Beijing. Italy abstained.
